How do we get into so much trouble?

Most of us are interested in doing what we consider ‘good’.  The problem is that without a way to determine what ‘good’ is, it is simply left up to whatever we feel at the moment.  We cannot allow that because our feelings will lie to us.  For example, when faced with a box containing 2 million dollars (because 1 million just wouldn’t do) that belongs to someone else, we may ‘feel’ like taking that box home with us.  That doesn’t make it right.  In a real world scenario, we see things like affairs and abortions that are often regretted later on.  But the situations were born out of a feeling.  A feeling that leads the person away from the decision that best serves their long term well being.

We often seek out ways to stop our short-term pain or to answer our immediate desires.  The problem is that if those paths are not guided by a standard, then we are only following our emotions that waver from one side of an issue to another, all depending upon our own situation and surroundings.

So if you ever wonder why people seek out things like the Bible, this is one of the reasons.  This is why so many of our successful leaders have been men and women of faith, because that standard calls them to a consistency that overrides their emotions.

Today’s Bible reading:  James 1:1-18
